Production History

Depending on the plot thread you choose, the cast size will fluctuate between four and a couple dozen roles.

Since the play was designed initially to be read aloud, and even ended up including the stage direction reader as a character, the play that was created could be done as simply (no production values at all) or elaborately as possible. As with the playwrights who wrote the various variations on a theme, the finished product is up to you.

REYNOLDS

man in his early 50s but looks younger

HAMILTON

a homeless man

GERRY

man in his early 50s but looks older

BICYCLE

Bicycle is...a bicycle, somehow endowed with the power of speech

ARIEL (Mermaid #2)

Ariel is the brighter of the two mermaid sisters from the lost city of Atlantis

MONKEY (Brian)

a monkey in search of a new organ grinder so he can dance once again

KELSEE (Mermaid #1)

Kelsee is the less bright of the two mermaid sisters from the lost city of Atlantis

MANATEE

the manatee guided Reynolds out to Atlantis, and is a bit more smart and world-weary than the people it guides

DEXTER, the Stage Direction Reader

a classically trained actor (male) trapped in the role of reading stage directions for other actors who get to play actual roles

CLAUDETTE

a young girl, 20s, trying to escape her family's matrimonial machinations

MARIE

Claudette's aunt, a calculating worman working on Claudette's behalf in matters of the heart and marriage, who shares a past with both Reynolds and Gerry

JONAS

a handsome young man, 20s, with a smile that could make anyone's knees buckle

AURORA

A beautiful princess trapped in a glass coffin

WOODS(WO)MAN

a romantic and strapping lumberjack, handy in a crisis, later revealed to be a strapping woman

PHILLIP

gay man - really, really gay man - imagine a really insulting stereotype of homosexuals - now double it - that's our young prince Phillip

WOMAN (Honey)

a female audience member swept away by Reynolds romantic entreaties

MAN (Manny)

a male audience member abandoned by his date, WOMAN (Honey), for Reynolds - left behind, he shares a homoerotic dance break with Gerry

MALEFESCENT

an evil female leather-clad dominatrix with a whip, wandering the enchanted forest, up to no good

BANSHEE

a banshee

LOYAL SUBJECT #1

purveyor of fairy tale exposition and local color as an extra

LOYAL SUBJECT #2

yet another purveyor of fairy tale exposition and local color as an extra

FAIRY

supernatural citizen of the enchanted forest - carryover from an early scene by another author - who is present but does not speak in the followup scene I wrote (5O)

WOOD NYMPH

another supernatural citizen of the enchanted forest - one more carryover from an early scene by another author - who is present but does not speak in the followup scene I wrote (5O)
