Setup:
Pelias violated the sanctuary of the sacred temple of Hera, queen of the gods, in order to kill the woman who had been tormenting his mother. Hera, as part of her decades-long revenge plot to get even with Pelias, needs to get Medea to fall in love with Jason and help him in his quest to capture the Golden Fleece. In order to do this, she needs to enlist help from unexpected quarters. (This scene can be done with only three actors, of any gender. Actor 4 already serves as narrator of the story and later Cupid. The section with Pelias, normally played by Actor 7, can also be taken on by Actor 4 instead, or excised. This is primarily a scene of the uneasy alliance between Hera and Aprhodite [Actor 5]).

ACTOR 4

Not wanting to leave anything to chance --

ACTOR 6 (Hera)

Hera! Queen of the gods!

ACTOR 4

-- sought out an unlikely ally.

ACTOR 5 (Aphrodite)

Aphrodite - goddess of love and beauty.

ACTOR 6 (Hera)

And one of my husband Zeus' many - many - bastard children.

ACTOR 4

By scores of other women, mostly mortal.

ACTOR 6 (Hera)

Thanks.

ACTOR 4

Don't mention it.

ACTOR 6 (Hera) approaches ACTOR 5 (Aphrodite).

ACTOR 5 (Aphrodite)

Hera.

ACTOR 6 (Hera)

Aphrodite.

Pause.

ACTOR 6 (Hera) (cont'd)

Look... I know we haven't been... close.
It doesn't matter to me that you're illegitimate.
Foam of the sea, that bitch Dione, I don't care where you came from.
That husband of mine has so many affairs, what does it matter anymore?
Zeus is your father -- he is my husband -- that makes us...
...family.
And this is different.
This is revenge.
"King" Pelias, a man, flouting the tradition of sanctuary in the sacred temple of a goddess.

ACTOR 5 (Aphrodite)

Really? Who?

ACTOR 6 (Hera)

Me!
Hera!

ACTOR 5 (Aphrodite)

Queen of the Gods.

ACTOR 6 (Hera)

Exactly!

ACTOR 5 (Aphrodite)

Oh. I see.

ACTOR 6 (Hera)

A mortal!

ACTOR 5 (Aphrodite)

Pelias.

ACTOR 6 (Hera)

Exactly.
Killing. Under my roof!
And for his own selfish ends.

****************

ACTOR 7 (Pelias) injects himself into the argument.

ACTOR 7 (Pelias)

I was killing the enemy of my mother.

ACTOR 6 (Hera)

When you were younger. Much. Younger.

ACTOR 7 (Pelias)

The enemy of my mother is *my* enemy.

ACTOR 6 (Hera)

That's adorable.
Go away now.

ACTOR 7 goes away.

******************

ACTOR 6 (Hera) (cont'd)

Pelias deserves everything he's got coming to him.
You can do something I need done so...
I need...
your...
help.

Pause.

ACTOR 5 (Aphrodite)

This is... interesting.
Quite a surprise...
But a pleasant one.

Pause.

ACTOR 6 (Hera)

So. Will you?

ACTOR 5 (Aphrodite)

Will I what?

ACTOR 6 (Hera)

Will you help me?

ACTOR 5 (Aphrodite)

You haven't asked me yet.

ACTOR 6 (Hera)

Will you -- please -- help me?

Pause.

ACTOR 5 (Aphrodite)

Delighted to. What does it entail?

ACTOR 4

On hearing of the plan, Aphrodite found it necessary to call in Cupid.

ACTOR 6 (Hera)

Do you have to bring your kid into this?

ACTOR 5 (Aphrodite)

Trust me.

ACTOR 4 takes on the role of Cupid.

ACTOR 4 (Cupid)

What's in it for me, Mom?

ACTOR 5 (Aphrodite)

How does a ball of shining gold and deep blue enamel strike you?

ACTOR 4 (Cupid)

Deal.
Be back in a flash.

ACTOR 4 (Cupid) makes a hasty exit.

ACTOR 6 (Hera)

What does he do with crap like that?

ACTOR 5 (Aphrodite)

Don't ask.
Just be glad he doesn't ask for cattle.
Zeus only knows where we'd put them.
And you know *we'd* both end up getting stuck with feeding the damn things.

ACTOR 6 (Hera)

And cleaning up after them?

ACTOR 5 (Aphrodite)

Exactly.

ACTOR 6 (Hera)

Ew.

ACTOR 5 (Aphrodite)

Exactly.

ACTOR 6 (Hera)

A ball of shining gold and deep blue enamel it is then.
