In order to attain the Golden Fleece, Jason must yoke two bronze-footed, fire-breathing bulls; plow the Field of Ares, god of war; sow the furrows with dragon's teeth, then fight off the warriors who will spring up from the earth where the dragon's teeth are planted. The night before he is to take on this challenge, Jason meets with Medea, the daughter of the king who laid down the challenge. The goddesses Hera and Aphrodite, keeping watch over Jason's quest for the Fleece, have sent Cupid to make Medea fall in love with Jason. Cupid's arrow found its mark and the divine intervention is working as planned.

ACTOR 2 (Jason)

Princess.

ACTOR 1 (Medea)

Sir.

ACTOR 2 (Jason)

Jason.

ACTOR 1 (Medea)

Medea.

ACTOR 2 (Jason)

Your nephew was correct. You are my only hope in an unfriendly land. A lady with such beauty and grace in her outward appearance cannot help but have the powers he described. And I hope also you have the mercy he sees in you and can find it in your generous heart to extend it to a stranger. For I am lost without you.

ACTOR 1 (Medea)

Take from me, Jason, this vial. In it is an ointment. It was taken from a plant that grew where the first drops of blood from Prometheus fell as the eagle began the fire-giver's eternal torment.
Rub this ointment on yourself and your weapons. Whatever it touches shall be invincible for a day. This will give you the power to yoke the bulls and plow the field.
And when the fierce warriors spring from the dragon's teeth you have sown in the furrows of the field of Ares, you will have the strength to do battle with them.
If they should become too much for you, simply throw a large stone in the midst of them. They will turn on each other and slaughter themselves.
In this way only shall you fulfill my father's challenge and live to attain the fleece.

ACTOR 1 (Medea) gives ACTOR 2 (Jason) the vial.

Their hands touch.

ACTOR 1 (Medea) (cont'd)

And when you return triumphant to your homeland, remember Medea, as I shall remember you, always.

ACTOR 1 (Medea) turns to go.

ACTOR 2 (Jason) takes both her hands in both of his.

ACTOR 2 (Jason)

As you have considered and found me worthy of your help, think on this. Come away with me. Your deeds will bring you worship in my country. And if you find me fit, and will have me, I will be true to you, Princess, so long as I draw breath.

ACTOR 1 (Medea)

I must go.
