ACTOR 1 (Medea)

I can't *believe* you!!

ACTOR 2 (Jason)

You brought it on yourself, my love.

ACTOR 1 (Medea)

Don't use that word. You don't know the first thing about it.

ACTOR 2 (Jason)

I did what I could. He wanted to have you killed, you know. I bargained him down to exile.

ACTOR 1 (Medea)

Big of you.

ACTOR 2 (Jason)

The boys are no longer part of the deal either. They can stay here with me.

ACTOR 1 (Medea)

I will not have you and that *bitch* raising my children.

ACTOR 2 (Jason)

You just don't know how to keep your mouth shut, do you? It's that kind of talk that got you in the mess you're in now.

ACTOR 1 (Medea)

After all I've done -- left my home, my country, my father. I was heiress to a kingdom. All my knowledge -- the ointment that made you invincible. The secret of beating the warriors that sprang from the dragon's teeth. The location of the Golden Fleece. Safe passage past the dragon that guarded it. The murder of my brother. Of Talus. Of Pelias. To say nothing of the hell of bearing two of your sons. From the moment I met you, I have dipped myself in blood so many times I will never be clean. Your murders are a part of me. All of this. And you have the gall --

ACTOR 2 (Jason)

I never asked you to --

ACTOR 1 (Medea)

That's right. You never asked. You *never* asked. You never had to. I never made you. And you think that absolves you.

ACTOR 2 (Jason)

Of what? For the gods' sake, woman. I brought you out of that backward little kingdom you lived in to one of the most civilized countries in creation. I spread word of all you'd done for the quest. People revered you for your cunning and your magic. And in return all you do is get in my way. Thanks to the "magic" you worked on Pelias and his daughters, I can never go back to the kingdom that should have been mine. Pelias robbed me of my birthright but only you could insure that I would never be able to reclaim it. And a marriage to Glauke could have been good for all of us, you and the boys included. The position, the power to be inherited when her father passes on. We could live, *rule* in Corinth.

ACTOR 1 (Medea)

And the children of pure blood you would have by her wouldn't change that, I suppose?

ACTOR 2 (Jason)

Goddammit, Medea!

ACTOR 1 (Medea)

Get your hands off me.

ACTOR 2 (Jason)

That's not what you really want.

ACTOR 2 (Jason) kisses ACTOR 1 (Medea).

ACTOR 2 (Jason) (cont'd)

That's what you'll miss most of all, isn't it? That's what's got you so mad. You just can't stand the thought of me kissing another woman. Putting my hands on another woman. Like I used to touch you, like I used to let you touch me.

ACTOR 1 (Medea)

Damn you.

ACTOR 2 (Jason)

That someone might be better. That maybe the sight of your aging body sickens me. That I was always laughing at you, underneath me, praying it would be over quickly.

ACTOR 1 (Medea)

DAMN YOU!

ACTOR 2 (Jason)

Of course you did all those things for me. But it wasn't you. It was all Hera and Aphrodite and Cupid. You never had any choice in the matter.

ACTOR 1 (Medea)

You're going to say all that was the gods, too?

ACTOR 2 (Jason)

All what?

ACTOR 1 (Medea)

The feelings.

ACTOR 2 (Jason)

Yours?

ACTOR 1 (Medea)

Mine. And yours.

ACTOR 2 (Jason)

Oh please stop. You're making a fool of yourself.

ACTOR 1 (Medea)

I'll see you suffer.

ACTOR 2 (Jason)

How? You have control over nothing that matters to me. Nothing. You can't hurt me.

ACTOR 1 (Medea)

I will.

ACTOR 2 (Jason)

Oh please be quiet.
Here.

ACTOR 1 (Medea)

A handful of coins? I don't want your charity.

ACTOR 2 (Jason)

Take it.

ACTOR 2 (Jason) throws the coins at ACTOR 1 (Medea).

ACTOR 2 (Jason) (cont'd)

Don't think of it as charity. Think of it as payment for services rendered. You've done your night's work. Now go indoors. Women like you shouldn't be seen in the light of day.

ACTOR 2 (Jason) leaves.
