ACTOR 3 (Oracle)

King Aegeus was ruler of Athens but had no children to inherit his kingdom.

ACTOR 9 (Aegeus)

I went to the Oracle at Delphi for advice.

ACTOR 3 (Oracle)

Welcome to the Oracle at Delphi.
Please state your question.

ACTOR 9 (Aegeus)

I am a king without any heirs to whom I may pass on my kingdom.

ACTOR 3 (Oracle)

Any girls?

ACTOR 9 (Aegeus)

No heirs at all. Not even any girls.

ACTOR 3 (Oracle)

That's a shame.

ACTOR 9 (Aegeus)

That's why I'm here.

ACTOR 3 (Oracle)

You will have children. In time.

ACTOR 9 (Aegeus)

I'm not getting any younger.

ACTOR 3 (Oracle)

And the rest of us are?

ACTOR 9 (Aegeus)

Do you have any advice?

ACTOR 3 (Oracle)

Be patient.
Wait.

Pause.

ACTOR 9 (Aegeus)

For the advice?

ACTOR 3 (Oracle)

That *is* the advice.
Be patient. Wait.
And whatever you do, don't have sex on the way back home to Athens after you leave here.

ACTOR 9 (Aegeus)

How did you know I'm from Athens?

ACTOR 3 (Oracle)

I'm the
Or-a-cle
at
Del-phi.

ACTOR 9 (Aegeus)

No sex on the way home?

ACTOR 3 (Oracle)

No sex on the way home.

ACTOR 9 (Aegeus)

Why not?

ACTOR 3 (Oracle)

If you do, you'll die of grief.

ACTOR 9 (Aegeus)

Immediately?

ACTOR 3 (Oracle)

Are you grieving currently?

ACTOR 9 (Aegeus)

No.

ACTOR 3 (Oracle)

Then no.
Not immediately.
But eventually.

ACTOR 9 (Aegeus)

I will die of grief.

ACTOR 3 (Oracle)

If you have sex on the way home. Yes.

ACTOR 9 (Aegeus)

That sounds like a fairly useless piece of advice.

ACTOR 3 (Oracle)

I don't make it up. I just pronounce it.

ACTOR 9 (Aegeus)

If I give you more money -- ?

ACTOR 3 (Oracle)

It won't change the prophecy.

ACTOR 9 (Aegeus)

But would it make it any less opaque?

ACTOR 3 (Oracle)

I think it's pretty straightforward.
Bang somebody on the road back to Athens at your peril.

ACTOR 9 (Aegeus)

I don't know why I bother.

ACTOR 3 (Oracle)

Right back at you, buddy.

ACTOR 9 (Aegeus)

Goodbye.

ACTOR 3 (Oracle)

Good luck. Keep it in your pants.

ACTOR 9 (Aegeus)

Keep your prophecy out of my pants.

ACTOR 3 (Oracle)

If only I could...

ACTOR 9 (Aegeus)

I headed back to Athens.

ACTOR 3 (Oracle)

He didn't keep it in his pants, but that's a completely different story.
So, unaware of the bastard son Theseus he'd foolishly fathered on the way back to Athens, all those years ago,

ACTOR 9 (Aegeus)

King Aegeus now ambled into Corinth still thinking himself childless.

ACTOR 3 (Oracle)

About the same time Medea and Jason were wishing themselves spouseless.
