Scene Detail

"The guy's not coming back. His heart's already gone. The rest is just moving trucks and travel arrangements."

From: Ally McBeal - Common As The Rain
Gender Age Character Name
Female 20s RENEE RADICK

Setup:
Renee, a lawyer, is talking to her best friend Ally about the problem she has with a current client at her firm, a man named Robert who Renee feels is deluding himself and wasting his money on legal proceedings as a way to solve a personal problem.

Robert and Jeremy started a successful computer business together. Jeremy left Robert for another man, and they are planning to leave town. Robert is using the buyout clause to delay his ex-lover's departure, hoping that the extra time, and the exposure to one another in court, will allow him to win Jeremy back.

Renee was briefly involved with a former flame of her own, Matt, who is a married man. She broke off the affair when she learned Matt's wife was pregnant. Ally references this in their discussion of Robert and his case and Renee's difficulty with it.

RENEE

It's over, Ally. The man's just prolonging his own agony.
Is that what I would have said to Matt's wife if he'd left her for me?
He was never gonna leave his wife - pregnant or not.
But if he had...
If he was truly in love with me, if he'd walked out that door and left her, if we were gonna move halfway across the country to start a new life, and at the last minute she played on her unborn child as a way to hold him here - the way this man is using the company to hold his lover here just a couple more days, like that's gonna make any difference - then yes, I would tell her to give it up, let it go, move on. The guy's not coming back. His heart's already gone. The rest is just moving trucks and travel arrangements.
