Scene Detail

"She wants to clean out the last of her things. She gave me a list."

From: Ally McBeal - Common As The Rain
2 Characters
Gender Age Character Name
Male 20s BILLY THOMAS
Female 20s ALLY MCBEAL

Setup:
Richard Fish's law firm is representing his friend Jeremy and Jeremy's current boyfriend Alex in a lawsuit brought against them by Jeremy's ex-lover Robert Lundy. Jeremy and Robert started a successful computer business together and Robert is using the buyout clause to delay Jeremy and Alex's plans to leave town. Fish is in charge of the case and Ally is second chair. Billy is reviewing the contract one last time for anything they, or opposing counsel, might have missed.

Ally and Billy were childhood sweethearts. Now Billy is in the process of ending his marriage to Georgia, and trying to give himself an image makeover. However, a gay male secretary working at Georgia's new law firm has wondered aloud if Billy might be in the process of coming out of the closet. Word is getting around the offices, and Fish teased Billy about it earlier in front of Ally.

(That scene is also available for viewing - the quote link is "Such a drama queen.")

Earlier in the day, the gay secretary also brought a list to Billy of items Georgia would like him to return as part of the divorce proceedings.

INT. BILLY'S OFFICE - NIGHT

Ally comes to the door.

She watches Billy working on the contract at his desk.

ALLY

Hey.

Billy looks up from the contract.

BILLY

Hey.

ALLY

How's the contract?

BILLY

Pretty standard stuff. The only real angle would be if he was using the delay to lower the price of buying our guy out. But I don't think that's Lundy's game here.

ALLY

Me either.

They look at each other.

BILLY

You don't have to check up on me.

ALLY

I'm not.

BILLY

I'm all right.

ALLY

I don't doubt that.

BILLY

Then why are you here?

FANTASY

Billy making love to Ally on his desk.

BACK TO REALITY

Ally clears her throat.

ALLY

No reason.

BILLY

We the only ones here?

ALLY

Well...

FANTASY

Things get a little rougher on the desk.

BACK TO REALITY

ALLY (CONT'D)

Richard's going over testimony with Jeremy and Alex but...

BILLY

Could I talk to you about something?

ALLY

Richard was just goading you.

BILLY

It's not that.

ALLY

You should take it as a compliment, I mean, that gay men think, that they want to...

BILLY

It's Georgia.

FANTASY

Billy shoves Ally abruptly off the desk onto the floor.

BACK TO REALITY

ALLY

Oh.

BILLY

She wants to clean out the last of her things. She gave me a list. Like I don't know what she'd want. Like I don't know her at all. Like I'm a stranger.

ALLY

Well... you have been... different, recently, Billy.

BILLY

You think there's anything I can do?

ALLY

You didn't get here by accident.

BILLY

Yeah, I guess you're right.

ALLY

Only thing you can do...

He looks up at her.

ALLY (CONT'D)

Pack her things carefully. Don't just throw them in a box. Give her that last bit of gentleness.

BILLY

The old Billy.

ALLY

He wasn't such a bad guy.

They look at one another.

ALLY (CONT'D)

I should go help Richard.

BILLY

This feeling. What I'm in the middle of right now. I don't ever want to feel this again.

ALLY

Just don't stop feeling altogether, OK?

She leaves.

He watches her go,

then picks up Georgia's list off his desk and holds it gently in both his hands.
