"He'll never believe me if you're in the room. I have to do this alone. I owe him that."
|From: Ally McBeal - Common As The Rain|
Richard Fish's law firm is representing his friend Jeremy and Jeremy's current boyfriend Alex in a lawsuit brought against them by Jeremy's ex-lover Robert.
Alex was also Jeremy's first boyfriend. After Alex left Jeremy broken-hearted, Jeremy met Robert and they built a happy and successful life together. Then Alex reappeared and befriended the couple, eventually rekindling a romance with Jeremy.
Alex's main advantage in driving a wedge between Jeremy and Robert was the fact that, even after many years in a relationship, Robert was still very closeted in public about his sexuality and his love for Jeremy.
Robert has been using the buyout clause on his business with Jeremy to delay Jeremy and Alex's plans to leave town, still hoping to win Jeremy back. Fish is in charge of the case and Ally is second chair.
(The strategy session between these same four characters covering what to do about Robert in court is also available for viewing - the quote link is "You better hope this one gets settled before you take the stand because that wouldn't go so well.")
Fish has just ripped Robert apart on the stand, using the personal ad Robert placed and Jeremy answered which began their relationship as his primary ammunition. Alex fed the ad to Fish, and Jeremy feels betrayed.
(That courtroom scene is also available for viewing - the quote link is "Ten years, even if they weren't everything you wanted, have to count for something. Another chance at least. I love you.")
Though the holes in Robert's case have been exposed, the judge has ordered the two sides to set up a meeting and resolve the matter outside the courtroom. Fish, Ally, Alex and Jeremy are returning to the law firm's offices in the wake of this ruling.
(Fish or Ally's lines can be shifted from one character to the other in this scene in order to make a three person scene for acting class purposes, depending on whether the third partner in the scene is male or female)

INT. ELEVATOR IN CAGE/FISH OFFICE BUILDING - DAY
Fish, Ally, Alex and Jeremy.
ALEXNo way. They only want this because they're losing.
ALLYIt's the judge, not the prosecution. We don't have a choice.
FISHBetter get used to being in a room with Robert, Alex. Jeremy befriends his ex's. It's how you got in the back door again, remember?
JEREMYI'll see him alone.
ALEXSo now you're talking to me?
JEREMYI wanted witnesses.
INT. CAGE/FISH OFFICE COMPLEX - DAY
The elevator opens. Jeremy heads for Fish's office with Alex, Fish, and Ally all trying to keep up.
ALEXYou're not really upset about the ad.
JEREMYThat was private.
INT. FISH'S OFFICE - DAY
ALEXYou framed the damn thing and put it in a place of honor in your home.
JEREMYAnd you pulled it out of the boxes I packed and used it as a weapon.
ALEXWhat were you doing bringing it with us anyway? Won't Robert miss it?
JEREMYWe both have a copy.
ALEXWell, that's thinking ahead.
JEREMYHe keeps his on his desk at the office where he can see it every day. How's that for closeted?
JEREMYOf having found someone worth building my life around? You bet. And so was he. You seem to forget if you had appreciated me the first time around, there wouldn't be a Robert.
ALEXWell, why don't you just stay with him?!
JEREMYDon't tempt me.
FISHWell, it's good you're finding this out now.
JEREMY and ALEXStay out of it.
ALLYGuys. We have to set up this meeting.
JEREMYI'll do it.
ALEXNot alone, you won't.
ALLYWe'll be in the room the whole time.
ALEXI mean I'm going.
JEREMYHe'll never believe me if you're in the room. I have to do this alone. I owe him that.
ALEXHe doesn't want to lose you. He's not as stupid as I was. He's made that clear.
Jeremy takes Alex's hand.
JEREMYI'll be back. We can be on a plane tonight.
Jeremy looks over to Ally.
ALLYI'll make the call.
