Scene Detail

"Place hasn't changed. / Nothing wrong with it. Why change?"

From: Ally McBeal - Common As The Rain
2 Characters
Gender Age Character Name
Female 20s GEORGIA THOMAS
Male 20s BILLY THOMAS

Setup:
Billy is in the process of ending his marriage to Georgia, at her request, in the wake of his rather radical, and slightly misogynist, personality change.

Georgia recently sent over her secretary with a list of items she would like Billy to return as part of the divorce proceedings.

Ally, Billy's childhood sweetheart, current co-worker, and a friend of Georgia's, has urged Billy not to just throw Georgia's things into a box, but to pack them carefully, to give her a "last bit of gentleness."

(That scene is also available for viewing - the quote link is "She wants to clean out the last of her things. She gave me a list.")

Earlier in the day, Billy dropped by Georgia's office to arrange a time for her to come by and pick up her things, something he could easily have done over the phone, but took the time to do in person.

INT. BILLY'S APARTMENT - NIGHT

Billy opens the door.

Georgia stands there, a box marked "Billy" in her arms.

BILLY

Hi.

GEORGIA

Hi.

Pause, with Georgia on the other side of the threshold of the place she used to live in.

BILLY

Come in.

She enters.

BILLY (CONT'D)

Let me take your...

Georgia looks around as Billy takes her coat.

They have an awkward dance, trying to negotiate the coat around the box, which she doesn't seem inclined to let go of.

They stand, her with the box, he with the coat.

GEORGIA

Place hasn't changed.

BILLY

Nothing wrong with it. Why change?

GEORGIA

Yeah.

He indicates the box.

BILLY

That for me?

GEORGIA

Oh. Yeah.

Billy takes it and sets it down next to a box marked "Georgia." He hesitates, then picks the other box up and takes it to her.

BILLY

For you.

She's surprised at the careful packing job.

GEORGIA

Thanks.

They stand, her with the box, he with the coat.

GEORGIA (CONT'D)

Well, I should...

BILLY

Yeah.

Another awkward dance with coat and box. He rests his hands on her shoulders just a moment when they're done.

BILLY (CONT'D)

Georgia...

GEORGIA

I really should...

BILLY

Yeah.

He walks her to the door.

GEORGIA

Thanks, Billy.

BILLY

You're welcome. See you in court.

She smiles sadly.

GEORGIA

Yeah.

He closes the door behind her, leans his head against it. Then he turns to see the box across the room. He can't go near it.

CUT TO:

INT. HALLWAY OUTSIDE BILLY'S APARTMENT - NIGHT

Georgia stands on the other side of the door, shifting the box in her arms. The size is fine. It shouldn't be hard to carry. But it is. She leaves.
