"This is a conservative religious person's worst nightmare, you know."
|From: Love Bot|
Two gay astronauts, Esther and Solomon, have been charged with repopulating the human race, with the help of the Love Bot - a half man, a half woman robot designed to be the perfect, desirable sex partner. Now they're contemplating what the new human race will look like, and the possibility that they will never again feel the touch of another human being...
The first three parts of this short play are under the pull quotes...
"All sex will be consensual./Very consensual."
"Our creators were always thinking about sex./They're scientists."
"My uterus is already really tired just thinking about this."

SOLOMONThis mission was designed to succeed.
ESTHERWell, the human race is currently extinct except for us so that proves we've managed to screw things up before.
SOLOMONAnd we probably will again. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't try.
ESTHERI'm gonna need to be able to talk to you like this. A lot.
SOLOMONI'm here. I'll bet they are, too.
ESTHERNo offense but
JENNIFERBonding with fellow humans.
SOLOMONWe should get to know them. We're going to be spending a lot of time together - making and raising children.
ESTHERThis is a conservative religious person's worst nightmare, you know.
SOLOMONYeah, but they're all dead now so -
ESTHERI'm sure we'll raise one.
JENNIFEROdds are - several.
SOLOMONWe teach them human history, that's going to be a part of it.
ESTHERWe'll essentially be home-schooling them, won't we?
SOLOMONYes, but with a database that includes the sum total of all human knowledge, so they should be OK.
ESTHERGod, they're going to start dating each other.
SOLOMONBrave new world.
ESTHERSex can't exactly be casual anymore.
SOLOMONWas it ever?
ESTHERCute. But be serious. This whole process is designed to get me pregnant. That, along with the harvesting, means their methods probably have pretty good odds of creating new life every time we have sex.
ESTHERPlease don't. Not right now. Thanks.
SOLOMONSetting aside the babies - just for a moment...?
SOLOMONIt's been a really long time since anybody touched me.
ESTHERPainfully long time since. But -
SOLOMONBut - ?
ESTHERHuman touch. That's - gone.
ESTHERI mean, I know, I know, the wonders of technology, remarkable simulation and all that but - another human being actually touching me - another woman touching me -
SOLOMONThere's still me. Sort of. Not woman, but - human.
And eventually the kids.
ESTHERAnd they will be a miracle.
But it's not the same, and you know it.
SOLOMONIt's where we are right now.
You and me. We *are* the human race right now.
And Justin and Jennifer - they're here to help.
SOLOMONYou two are designed to feel as well as look real, yes?
JENNIFEROh yes. Touch my breasts. Please.
ESTHEROK, we were just talking about how long it's been since we saw first base. I'm not sure I can jump right to second.
JUSTINMetaphor. Double entendres.
SOLOMONCould I touch your chest?
JUSTINMay I - ?
JUSTIN touches SOLOMON's chest in return.
They continue laying hands on one another as discussion continues.
JENNIFERMay I hold your hand?
JENNIFERWe can walk around the bases if you want. As slowly as you want.
JUSTINMay I kiss you?
SOLOMONYou don't need to ask permission for everything.
JUSTINNeither do you. I am yours.
SOLOMONYou could have my legs up over my head in less than five minutes, you know that?
JUSTINIf that's the way you want it.
SOLOMONYou know the way I want it.
JUSTINI know all the ways you want it. I can adapt. To anything.
ESTHEROK, before you start screaming just be sure the bulkhead doors down the hall are closed, OK?
JUSTIN and SOLOMONOK.
JUSTIN and SOLOMON begin kissing. They're settling in for a good long snog.
ESTHERWell at least now I know why they set up our sleeping quarters on the ship so far apart.
JENNIFERThis was designed to give you time to think and defuse any rash sexual decisions. In addition, it also was calculated that the extreme distance of the "walk. of. shame" the next morning in either direction would discourage -
ESTHERHow about you shut up and kiss me?
JENNIFER and ESTHER begin kissing. They are also settling in for good long snog.
We can linger on this for a bit.
As the couples shift, after a moment or two, JUSTIN and JENNIFER give each other a thumbs up sign in the air. They don't necessarily need to see one another. They are a two parts of the same robot system. They know what the other is doing without looking.
As the couples continue to kiss and shift, after another moment or two, the two pairs are in a position such that ESTHER can reach out a hand to SOLOMON.
Neither of them disconnect from the kiss in progress.
But SOLOMON takes ESTHER's hand - a little human touch.
The four continue to kiss as the lights slowly fade to black.
Whichever you prefer.
