Now they're contemplating what the new human race will look like, and the possibility that they will never again feel the touch of another human being...

The first three parts of this short play are under the pull quotes...

"All sex will be consensual./Very consensual."

and

"Our creators were always thinking about sex./They're scientists."

and

"My uterus is already really tired just thinking about this."

SOLOMON

This mission was designed to succeed.

ESTHER

Well, the human race is currently extinct except for us so that proves we've managed to screw things up before.

SOLOMON

And we probably will again. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't try.

ESTHER

I'm gonna need to be able to talk to you like this. A lot.

SOLOMON

I'm here. I'll bet they are, too.

JUSTIN

We are.

ESTHER

No offense but

JENNIFER

Bonding with fellow humans.

JUSTIN

Understandable.

SOLOMON

We should get to know them. We're going to be spending a lot of time together - making and raising children.

ESTHER

This is a conservative religious person's worst nightmare, you know.

SOLOMON

Yeah, but they're all dead now so -

ESTHER

I'm sure we'll raise one.

JENNIFER

Odds are - several.

ESTHER

Thank you.

JENNIFER

You're welcome.

SOLOMON

We teach them human history, that's going to be a part of it.

ESTHER

We'll essentially be home-schooling them, won't we?

SOLOMON

Yes, but with a database that includes the sum total of all human knowledge, so they should be OK.

ESTHER

God, they're going to start dating each other.

SOLOMON

Not inbreeding.

ESTHER

Still.

SOLOMON

Brave new world.

ESTHER

Sex can't exactly be casual anymore.

SOLOMON

Was it ever?

ESTHER

Cute. But be serious. This whole process is designed to get me pregnant. That, along with the harvesting, means their methods probably have pretty good odds of creating new life every time we have sex.

JUSTIN

Statistically speaking...

ESTHER

Please don't. Not right now. Thanks.

JUSTIN

Understood.

JENNIFER

You're welcome.

SOLOMON

Setting aside the babies - just for a moment...?

ESTHER

Yes?

SOLOMON

It's been a really long time since anybody touched me.

ESTHER

Same here.

SOLOMON

Kissing?

ESTHER

Painfully long time since. But -

SOLOMON

But - ?

ESTHER

Human touch. That's - gone.

SOLOMON

Well -

ESTHER

I mean, I know, I know, the wonders of technology, remarkable simulation and all that but - another human being actually touching me - another woman touching me -

SOLOMON

There's still me. Sort of. Not woman, but - human.
And eventually the kids.

ESTHER

And they will be a miracle.
But it's not the same, and you know it.

SOLOMON

It's where we are right now.
You and me. We *are* the human race right now.
And Justin and Jennifer - they're here to help.

ESTHER

Right.

SOLOMON

You two are designed to feel as well as look real, yes?

JENNIFER

Oh yes. Touch my breasts. Please.

ESTHER

OK, we were just talking about how long it's been since we saw first base. I'm not sure I can jump right to second.

JENNIFER

Baseball references?

JUSTIN

Metaphor. Double entendres.

JENNIFER

Ah. Understood.

SOLOMON

Could I touch your chest?

JUSTIN

Certainly.

SOLOMON

Oh.

JUSTIN

May I - ?

SOLOMON

Please.

JUSTIN touches SOLOMON's chest in return.

They continue laying hands on one another as discussion continues.

SOLOMON (cont'd)

Oh.

ESTHER

Feels real?

SOLOMON

Yup.

JENNIFER

May I hold your hand?

ESTHER

That's sweet.

JENNIFER

We can walk around the bases if you want. As slowly as you want.

JUSTIN

May I kiss you?

SOLOMON

You don't need to ask permission for everything.

JUSTIN

Neither do you. I am yours.

SOLOMON

You could have my legs up over my head in less than five minutes, you know that?

JUSTIN

If that's the way you want it.

SOLOMON

You know the way I want it.

JUSTIN

I know all the ways you want it. I can adapt. To anything.

ESTHER

OK, before you start screaming just be sure the bulkhead doors down the hall are closed, OK?

JUSTIN and SOLOMON

OK.

JUSTIN and SOLOMON begin kissing. They're settling in for a good long snog.

ESTHER

Well at least now I know why they set up our sleeping quarters on the ship so far apart.

JENNIFER

This was designed to give you time to think and defuse any rash sexual decisions. In addition, it also was calculated that the extreme distance of the "walk. of. shame" the next morning in either direction would discourage -

ESTHER

How about you shut up and kiss me?

JENNIFER and ESTHER begin kissing. They are also settling in for good long snog.

We can linger on this for a bit.

As the couples shift, after a moment or two, JUSTIN and JENNIFER give each other a thumbs up sign in the air. They don't necessarily need to see one another. They are a two parts of the same robot system. They know what the other is doing without looking.

As the couples continue to kiss and shift, after another moment or two, the two pairs are in a position such that ESTHER can reach out a hand to SOLOMON.

Neither of them disconnect from the kiss in progress.

But SOLOMON takes ESTHER's hand - a little human touch.

The four continue to kiss as the lights slowly fade to black.
Or stars.
Or moonlight.

Whichever you prefer.
